Installing Energy Efficient Window Coverings

By Rena Hudson

During the year, it is very likely that your home will experience a range of temperatures, and they may not all be comfortable enough for you to live in without heating or cooling. However, with the right preparation, you can minimize the amount of energy you must utilize to keep things as warm or cool as you would like. Energy efficient window coverings are one of the easiest and most important things you can include to make sure that this process is as effective as possible.

Obviously, you want your home to stay warm in the winter, but cool in the summer. When choosing the proper window treatment for this purpose, you should be looking at ones that let as little heat escape from one side to the other as possible. Depending on how many windows you have and what type of budget you have available to you, there are various options for this.

Whether they are large or small, sun shades can be very effective at keeping rays of sunlight from ever reaching a window. Particularly if you have a deck or porch that might benefit from the extra shade, large awnings can be quite beneficial. If you would prefer a less expansive option, there are also smaller overhangs that can be mounted directly above a window frame, blocking out a smaller area, but keeping the benefits.

For a less expensive, easy to install option, you can also consider including blinds, screens, or drapes. If you are concerned about the look of your new window coverings, these are also good options, as it is generally much easier to find ones that are not only efficient, but attractive as well. However, make sure that the way they look does not overrule their primary function, and remember that the color, dark or light, can make a big difference in whether heat is kept in or reflected.

You can also find films and paneling that reflect light away from the window itself, reducing the amount of heat that gets in. These are also usually easy to install, often attaching directly to the panel itself or just around the edge. However, they are not a very attractive option, and can result in visibility problems from the outside, so they are not as popular.

A slightly more expensive option that is nonetheless very effective deals with replacing the panes of glass themselves, and reinforcing the insulation around them. These are likely to require installation by a professional. While they cost more at the start, you are also the most likely to see long-term benefits here.

Aside from the benefits you will see in your home, there are also tax incentives to be gained from considering window coverings. Many companies have their treatments certified as energy efficient, which can qualify you for a tax credit. If you are interested in this, make sure you research ahead of time which types fit this category.

There are many benefits to the installation of energy efficient window coverings that you will be able to enjoy. Not only will you see a financial boost as your bills go down, you will also have the satisfaction of knowing that you are helping the environment. Decide what type is right for your home and start the process today.
