Creating And Maintaining Your Koi Pond

By Roland Stockwell

Any home or office will look more interesting and relaxing if it has a koi pond on the grounds. These ponds are so popular that a lot of homeowners have decided to have their own pond at home. Then again, these ponds are not the easiest to maintain. If you want your fish to stay healthy, your pond should be created properly. Regular maintenance is also necessary so your fish will stay healthy and your pond will look as beautiful as it was at day one.

Koi is a very popular fish and is known to many all over the world, especially in Japan where they are hugely popular. There are dozens of varieties of these fish, which are actually ornamental koi. Prices range, depending on the type of koi you purchase, but all are beautiful and tend to live very long lives if their health is monitored carefully.

Koi are omnivorous species fish that enjoy a wide variety of foods. However it is important to note that feeding should be sparse during winter months as their bodies hibernate somewhat and cannot process large amounts of food. They can simply nibble on algae that grow naturally in the pond. When the hot season comes, these fish eat more and can even be trained to nibble food out of the hand of their caregiver.

Because these fish are special, it is important to create a comfortable haven for them. When creating a pond, make sure that it is the right size. With size you should take note of the gallons of water it should have as well as the pond's overall depth. The pond should have adequate water so that the fish can still rest near the cool bottom of the pond during warm months.

Once your pond is filled with water, you then proceed to the next step. You have to ensure that only quality water is in your pond. The water also needs regular inspection and maintenance. Without the use of certain products, this can take too much time and effort. You should avoid chemicals and perhaps think about using an easy, natural cleaning product such as AquaSphere PRO. Another option would be the Healthy Ponds AquaLily floating water cleaner, which is not only effective but also attractive.

The products mentioned above are safe and also approved by veterinarians. They will not harm your fish or anyone else that touches the water. They work by releasing beneficial bacteria to the pond. Each AquaSphere contains enough bacteria to last 30 days, and each bacteria pack for the AquaLily also lasts for a month. After that time period, you just have to get a new one. This may be all you need to keep water beautiful and safe throughout the year.
