Uses For Switchable Privacy Glass

By Enid Hinton

The desire for private space to yourself has driven people for centuries. Finding a means of being able to focus on the things that are most important demands that some type of solitude be created even when you are surrounded by others. A very effective solution to this problem has been found with the advent of switchable privacy glass. This product allows the user to be in control of the amount of solitude they desire.

This laminated windowpane consists of polymer liquid crystal film that is sandwiched between layers of glass and layers of conductive material. The final effect is a window that is electrified and with the flip of a switch can change from translucent to opaque. When electricity is applied to the film inside the panes the liquid crystals line up to form an opaque barrier that cannot be seen through.

This product is available for business as well as private use. Many hospital emergency rooms have chosen to use them to separate patients because they are more cost efficient as a permanent resource than drapes that need cleaning and replacing on a regular basis. Dental offices use them as a space saving device because they take much less room than regular walls between clients. They can easily be cleaned and sanitized without disruption of patients or medical personnel.

It also can be used as a means of presenting information to groups by using the opaque feature as a screen for projections. Conference rooms and individual work stations can be allotted periods of team building and solitary work time with the flip of the control switch. Retail stores are able to use it for advertising by this same method of projecting sales or products on the surface of the windows.

Those individuals who own homes that are built with many large windows and skylights find that these windows are perfect for preserving their solitude and allowing natural lighting to lessen the amount of power they use in their homes. The sun's UV rays are cut to nearly zero when the opaque mode is in use. Window coverings are far less necessary because exposure of interior rooms is eliminated during evening and night time hours.

To obtain these windows you will need to order them from the manufacturer. Measurements must be precise because you will not be able to cut them down once they are made. They can be installed by anyone who knows how to put windows in place but an electrician will be required to hook up the electrical current. It is highly recommended that automatic timers be installed and many people also request remote control mechanisms be included. Installing timers alleviates the problem of remembering to operate the windows in opaque mode for a minimum of four hours daily to protect the operational systems.

This treatment has found uses in vehicles also. Tour buses and motor homes find it very helpful for passengers when blocking bright sun light or at night for sleeping. The windows come in several colors that can blend with most decors in homes or vehicles. Consumers can choose from bronze, grey, green or clear tints. There is also some limited use of this process in private vehicles. It is controlled by individual state regulations but highly available for private individuals.

People and businesses are constantly in search of cost effective ways to provide security and solitude for those they care for. This product provides a large measure of assurance towards obtaining both of these goals.
