By Sandra Turner

To become a professional mole trapper you need to have passion for it. Moles can be annoying especially if you wake up to new mole hills on your compound every day. Trapping is the most effective method one can use to get rid of them. However you need to be an expert to know how to set a mole trap. Study the hills so that you can figure out your next move.

Live trapping would be a good beginning for non-experts who cannot put up with the moles. Here you put a bucket under the active tunnel waiting for one to fall inside. They are not bad creatures since they eat the harmful microorganisms found in the soil. Also they help in soil aeration. Therefore, if for some reason you do not mind them there is no need for setting a trap.

Mole traps can be easily found therefore read the instructions given by the manufacturer so that you know the correct way to set the trap. The most effective and tested method has been spring trap. This is whereby one makes a small surface in the area flat and places the trap over the surface. Wait for the moment a mole will fall inside.

After arming the trap following every step indicated keep checking if they have been trapped or not. It could take several days but if it becomes too long move it to another tunnel. Spring trap should be covered with a bucket to ensure that no pets or instead get caught. Once the trap has been triggered remove the bucket and the caught mole.

Before setting them ensure that the mole has settled. In case it is still digging more mole hills you will get distracted and it could disappear for some time. Look for the hills that get bigger every morning. Set you tramp in one of them. You can use a stick to push deep into the ground and tell how far the tunnel has gone.

The trap should be in a position whereby it can be set off once it is touched. These traps are closely related to the mice ones whereby with the slightest touch the go off. You do not want to lose your target. Place it a place where there will be no distraction. Ensure that you remove the soil away from the trap since it could prevent moles from being trapped.

Ensure the entrance is not sealed once you cover the hole. The mole hill should be completely sealed off in that no light is penetrating. Light will scare away the moles and they will not get pass through the tunnel hence they might not get trapped. Check to confirm if the trap is well set before sealing the mole hill.

If you want to be a mole hunter know the basis of how they dig their tunnels how deep and long they are. It could be an exciting job if you have passion for the work. However if you are only doing it just to get them out of your compound first know the active holes. Get to know how deep they are so that you can settle for a particular trap.
