By John Allen

Almost every homeowner would love a lush, green lawn, one that is the envy of the neighborhood. However, not every yard is capable of providing the correct environment for that lawn. Luckily, their is an answer these people. The answer is perennial ground covers. They are lush, lovely, and spread out well to cover the entire area. Some even have a grass-like appearance.

Look over a wide range of shape, height and hues. Settle on one to imitate the look of grass, or pick something with dainty blooms, in one or more colors. These sprawling plants are available in an assortment of hues to meet your gardening needs and desires.

Plants generally come in annual, and perennial varieties. Annuals are only around for one season, while perennials come back year after year. Each year your vegetation will grow again and spread along the area. The are somewhat slower to grow and spread than an annual would be, but the bonus is that it's planted once and keeps returning.

There are several benefits to this type of vegetation. If weeds are a problem, you'll be happy to know that weeds won't be able to take root in the area where the cover is planted. The vegetation grows to completely cover the area, leaving no room for infiltration of weeds.

If soil erosion is a concern or if your yard has a slope, these plants are perfect for you. They are great at keeping the soil where it should be. Their roots also keep the water from running off where it doesn't do any good.

Before you pick your plants it's essential to know the kind of light that the property gets. Some do well in bright sunlight, some halfway sun, and some develop perfectly in the shade if a tree. There is something for each lighting choice and soil so finding the correct plant for your region ought to be easy. With such a large number of choices it might be hard to narrow it down.

The number of individual plants you purchase is something else to keep in mind. The more that you buy, the quicker the space can be filled in. The fewer you buy, the longer it may take to get the look that you want. However, as these do spread, you will eventually be rewarded with the covering you want.

When you want something easy, this is the way to go. Imagine no more weekends spent mowing the lawn. You'll also save money on the cost of watering since their needs are so much less than grass. Best of all, it grows almost anywhere so you won't have to look at a patchy yard anymore. Rip out the remaining lawn and add several of these beautiful plants, then just sit back and watch them grow. Even if you can grow grass, these plants make a nice decorative accent for areas such as surrounding the driveway, or around shrubs.
