Understanding Functioning Of Pull Type Spreaders

By Donna Edwards

The necessity behind invention of machines is making work easier. Work that would require a couple of days to complete using manual labor would instead take a couple of hours if machines are employed. This is the reason behind the incorporation of machines into all aspects of life from outdoor duties like maintenance of lawns to indoor duties like cleaning homes. Below is useful information regarding pull type spreaders.

For those people who have large gardens and/or landscape, it is important to automate and use machines in some of the maintenance activities involved to make work easier. One important machine for lawn maintenance that people should buy is the lawn spreader. Spreaders are used to spread various substances such as grass seed and fertilizer on lawns. The presence of various models and types of spreaders often make it a little challenging to choose the right product.

The market is filled with many types of spreaders, which bear different brand names, yet they have a similar price range and come in different qualities. To make it easier when it comes to making a choice of the type of spreader to buy, one needs to understand the various types of spreaders that are on the market. Basically, these devices come in three major types.

These are the drop spreader, broadcast spreader and handheld spreader. The handheld model can be used easily albeit having a limited capacity. An individual uses one hand in fertilizer release and application by grinding and the other hand in lifting the spreader. The limited capacity makes handheld spreaders not ideal for larger gardens or lawns.

Compared to the drop spreader, it has a larger capacity and its hopper has the capability of housing more fertilizer. Contrary to the handheld model, one does not hold it in the hand. Alternatively, for it to apply the material on the lawn, it has to be pushed or pulled. It functions by making material drop to the bottom. It finds application in lawns of medium sizes due to its moderate size.

A broadcast spreader is another variety of pull/push type of spreader. However, unlike the drop spreader, this device spreads the material around the lawn using its rotary mechanism. The material is spread to a radius of 3 to 4 feet. This device is ideal for people who have a large garden or lawn. This is because it can also be moved by attaching it to a tractor or some other mechanism.

While a pull type spreader is in use, one ought to consider a number of factors. First, accompanying the devices is an operation manual that is to be read and understood for its effective use. The manual instructions aid in spreader calibrations. In addition, information on patterns and rate are contained in the manual.

When loading the spreader, one should do it on the sidewalk or driveway. After loading, one can then move into the lawn and start spreading the material. Maintaining a steady pace is necessary in order to ensure that the application is uniform. The opening of the spreader should be closed when one is making a turn or stopping.
