Tips On Doing Outdoor Furniture Refinishing

By Kate McMahon

Outdoor furniture refinishing in Austin Texas is often done without the help of professional services. Because exterior furnishings are often exposed to rain, ice or sun, they need a regular maintenance and refinishing. With these basic tips, doing it at home could be possible so that buying new pieces or paying for repairs would no longer be needed.

Mineral spirits can be applied by wiping it on the surfaces and this should be done before attempting to do any touch up. This will reveal the look of the furnishing if a clear coating will be applied after the renewal as the chemical will saturate temporarily the original coat. If the piece still looks good, a clean up and a refinishing would just be the necessary repairs to do.

Clean the piece thoroughly because this is basic in every touch up work and also to determine the needed repairs on the surfaces. The original luster could be restored since all the old grime that have been stuck would be removed. With the help of water and dish soap, gently scrub any dirt and if the pieces have moldings or carvings, use a paint brush to clean.

Because this kind of pieces are exposed to elements such as rain, snow and heat which could loosen the old coat, removing it would not be very hard. This could be simply done with the help of a high pressure washer which could also take off excess flaking. Have the pieces dry up completely before sanding.

Some old pieces have paint spatters but these should not cause worry as they could easily be removed without causing damage. Make a paint scraper out of razor with a straight edge by just wrapping the edges with a masking tape and then bent slightly. The blade should be perpendicular to the surface and the curved center section allows the removal.

Some pieces might also have chippings on the surfaces or the molding might be damaged. Fix this type of problem with a putty that has been kneaded with a gloved hand. Apply it evenly on the surface in order to obtain a smooth finish, then sand it and stain it afterward.

Now that the surfaces of the pieces are smooth, application of the new coat follows. Paint brushes or foam brushes are often used to apply while some just wipe on the chemical. Applying a new finish will restore the piece to its original luster and it could also protect it from exposure to environmental elements.

Painting or staining it are some available options when it comes to finishing and it usually depends on the choice of the owner. Be certain that the coat have thoroughly dried up before using the furnishing. Have an idea about this from studying the package of the chemical which is indicated by the product manufacturer.

In doing outdoor furniture refinishing in Austin Texas, many have been mistaken in allowing the piece to dry outside the house after coating. Dirt might stick on to it by making contact thus, it would be wiser to allow the thorough drying indoors. After which, the piece would look new like the original.
