Modern living seems to have a major reliance on electronically based technologies. They are there to help make everyone's life so much easier, and yet were an electromagnetic pulse to affect the area so many of these systems would be made useless. As a consequence a lot of businesses are starting to invest in protection for these vulnerable systems. This protection is known as EMP hardening.
Just consider what would happen to your life if these systems were not implemented. You leave work as all of the systems appear to have gone offline and you are worried about your family. You try to contact them but there is no cell phone coverage and all of the land lines fail to work. So you decide that you will drive to your residence to make sure that everything is alright.
The normal methods of controlling traffic will no longer be there. So along with everyone else worrying about their families there will be problems on the roads. With no traffic controls things will become a free for all and there will be plenty of accidents. These incidents will not be able to be reported to the emergency services as the cell phones will not work.
Even if you need to put fuel into your car you are going to face problems. The fuel pumps are going to be something else which will no longer function. The only ones to still operate will be the very old fashioned hand pumps, but there will not be many of those about. If there is such a gas station near you then be prepared for big queues.
Should you be one of the lucky ones who have managed to get fuel you then have the problem about paying for it. You will only be able to use cash, and that will be limited to how much you are carrying with you as the ATM machines at the banks will no longer work. Even when you get home you will find that your family will have fared no better. The family car will not work as unlike you they were not able to park underground, and without transport they haven't been able to get the groceries.
Not only that no one will know what is happening. The TV and radio networks will have all been knocked offline, and there will also be no internet. People will be totally reliant on the civil authorities and the military to keep everyone informed about the ongoing situation.
On a personal level there are some who claim it is worthwhile keeping a cell phone, a transistor radio and walkie-talkies inside an old microwave oven. Opinion is divided as to whether the oven should be grounded or not, just in case the ground lead could cause problems. The theory behind this is that the oven is designed not to let microwaves out, so an electromagnetic pulse shouldn't be able to enter.
Big businesses are already starting to protect their systems with EMP hardening. In the event of a catastrophe the systems will automatically shut down, and they will have to be manually reset. The good news is that even though it might take time the data is recoverable, and life can continue much the same as normal. Maybe the Boy Scout motto of 'Be Prepared' is worth remembering.
