Valuable Information About DIY VS Professional Reconditioned Hot Tubs

By Marissa Velazquez

One of the biggest things about most indoor plumbing is everyone can take baths and showers every day. It has not been that long ago that water had to be warmed up on wood and coal stoves and put into soaking tubs. Many of these early tubs were made using cast iron, because they held heat much longer and more family members could bathe this way. Luckily modern made showers and bathtubs are constructed from various composite materials so people can avoid expensive remodels instead getting reconditioned hot tubs.

There are many advantages to using this route vs a new bathroom remodel. The greatest advantage is that people can decide on colors or a combination of different colors that they really enjoy instead of being limited with the most common colors peach, white and gray. With the many new materials being developed these bathtubs can be as long lasting and just as durable as original finishes.

Older tubs get thousands of tiny microscopic pours over time from prolonged wear and use. These tiny pours become a huge breading ground for many types of mold growth, fungus and mildew. In several cases new finishes may be better than older ones because it will seal up these pores creating a smoother surface that most fungus and molds will have difficulties growing onto. This makes cleaning them easier which will costs less money.

Generally speaking a refinishing job is not always a DIY sort of project. It is often done by professionals that are trained how to do it, and basically specialize in this type of work. This will not mean that a typical home owner should not attempt it, rather many professionals can often do better work and offer a warranty.

The typical steps for a home DIY kit and the steps professionals use are very close to being the same. Professionals generally have access to better application equipment, materials and a proven technique they have developed from experience. If you are confident that you could perform this job yourself, this is a basic reference for the things you need to know.

The tub must be completely cleaned of any residue. Carefully sand the edges of any cracks or holes and fill with body filler. Let this dry and sand smooth again. Clean with acetone and dry. Protect any surface that is not going to be refinished. Apply bonding agent primer and acrylic paint in that order.

Ensure there is enough drying time between the coats of primer and the paint. Lightly sand it between each coat to help make sure your finish is smooth as possible. Always keep it cleaned up and smooth. When the final coat of the paint has dried off, use paste buffing compound to finish polishing it to a nice shine.

Typically reconditioned hot tubs could save you considerable money that you could be spent on more critical things for your house. Doing it yourself may save even more. The key thing is to decide what realistic expectations you have and letting your budget lead the way.
