Hurricane Protection For Windows Is Important

By Liliana Mills

No matter what you do it is going to be difficult to completely protect your house from hurricanes and bad storms. But, there are ways in which you can lessen the damage by making sure that you have some sort of hurricane protection for windows installed in your home.

There are different ways in which you can get ready for a hurricane and to protect every window in your home. Word of warning however, do not believe the old rumor that taping them up is going to help. Tape does not give you any kind of protection and only gives you and your family an unrealistic sense of security.

You might want to consider windows that are called hurricane resistant. These are pretty good at resisting high winds up to a certain speed and will resist shattering. If you consider this kind of window make sure they follow the suggestions that your state has set down for them.

These seem to be the most popular for two major reasons, first they are attractive and second, they do not require any kind of shutters to be installed. Note though these are the most expensive to buy so your wallet could take a big hit.

Another option are storm shutters that are for hurricanes. These can be installed on the window at the time the window is installed or you can install them later with ease. People often choose these because they are very easy to install and they actually can made to look like an accent for your home. These too can be pretty steep in price and if you go with lesser expensive one, can be unattractive.

Then there are the storm panels that can be used. These are either made of steel or aluminum and protect your windows quite well. They generally require that there are installation of bolts or brackets on the home to be able to hold the panels in place. These are not left up all year and are installed when warnings have been issued. They will take more than one person to install.

The advantage of this type of protection is that they tend to be far less expensive than the shutters or the hurricane resistant windows. However, the disadvantage is that they really don't look very good are heavy and still somewhat expensive.

The one thing a lot of people visualize when it comes to protecting a window are the plywood panels and they are used quite often by both homes and businesses. When these are used they need to be no less than five eighths inch in thickness. These really can protect a window quite well as long as they are put up in the correct fashion.

Plywood of course in the end is the least expensive item to use but one of the biggest disadvantages of it is the fact that you really cannot buy it ahead of time due to the fact that it could end up being rotten by the time you need it. Because of this, often when you do need it, hardware stores could run out of it before the storm hits. Another disadvantage is that the wood is heavy and can be hard to put up.

No matter what you decide upon, it is important that you do have some sort of hurricane protection for windows in your home. None of them are going to be perfect but it is important that you decide upon something to be prepared for the next storm.
