Looking To Plant A Garden? Try These Ideas!

By Megan Smith

There are lots of natural ways that you can grow a healthy, organic garden. All you need to do is find out what they are, and then use them.

You can use the wooden handles of your tools as measurement sticks. Tools with long handles, such as shovels, hoes and rakes can be made into measuring sticks. Lay your handles on the floor, and put measuring tape right next to them. You can label distances using a permanent marker. Now you have easy access to a long ruler whenever you are gardening.

A garden with a foundation of healthy soil is the best defense against pests. Healthy soil encourages vigorous plant growth and makes your garden more resistant to common diseases and insects. You want to cultivate quality soil with adequate salt levels, which leads to healthy plants.

Garden vegetables should be planted in areas of the ground that receive a minimum of six hours of daily sunlight. Most vegetables need at least that much sun for optimal growth speed. Some flowers also require direct sunlight for a portion of each day.

Keep your garden fertilized. Manure is a great garden additive, but it is important that you choose a manure that has been composted commercially so that there is less of a risk of pathogens. There are a number of options for fertilizer, but the truth is that what you use is unimportant; you just have to remember to use something.

When mowing the lawn, don't mow the grass all the way down to the root. Higher grass sends roots further down, increasing lawn strength and viability. Short grass leads to more shallow roots and will result in more brown, dried-out patches.

There are natural materials, and you can also use other plants to help keep pests away from your garden. A good way to keep slugs away is to create a border with onions around a garden with vegetables. Marigolds would do this trick as well. Insects can be deterred if you use wood ash instead of mulch around trees and shrub seedlings. These methods prevent use of harsh chemicals.

Gardening is a wonderful hobby that can be very rewarding. You could make your home look better, get fresh vegetables and flowers. Apply these tips to make sure you do everything properly for better results.
